Public Education Funding
Dear CSD Community,
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week and with public educational funding currently being on the forefront in our state, we are encouraging our community to write to the NC legislature to encourage them to pass a budget that fully funds public education in North Carolina.
As a reminder, charter schools, like district schools, are funded on a per-pupil basis; charter schools do not take money away from district schools because all public schools receive funding per student. Charter schools provide an excellent education to their students despite receiving less overall funding per student than district schools.
You can email the legislature from this website: https://www.ncmegaphone.com/ or email your representatives from here: ncleg.gov
Here is a template you can use, or craft your own email:
[Greeting]
I am writing to you this Teacher Appreciation Week to implore you to better fund North Carolina’s public schools.
North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation, and the state’s GDP is growing too. We should not have one of the most poorly funded public education systems in the country.
In the twenty-first century, it is going to become increasingly important to have students who can think critically and have a connection to an adult who cares about them. The teacher in the classroom should be able to focus on positive relationships with students. They should not be focused on where to get the resources they need in their classroom. Our teachers (and all educators) deserve to be respected and supported to do the crucial work they have been called to do within our schools.
More money will not fix all the problems, but a lack of funds only helps to create more problems for students, educators, parents, and the state of North Carolina.
Invest in North Carolina’s future. Please fully fund our public schools.
